Everyone's favorite. Make and freeze ahead of time. Makes 2 to 3 dozen cookies.

1 cup Butter or margarine, softened 250 mL
1 cup Granulated sugar 250 mL
1 Large Egg 1
1 tsp Vanilla 5 mL
2 cups All purpose flour 450 mL
1 tsp Baking soda 5 mL
1 tsp Cream of tartar 5 mL
1/4 tsp Cinnamon {optional but good) 1 mL
1/4 tsp Salt 1 mL
Colored sprinkles or sugar

Preheat oven to 350°F [170°C]).

Cream butter and sugar in large bowl. Add egg and vanilla; beat until light and fluffy.

Stir in flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, cinnamon and salt just until blended. Form into a ball; wrap in plastic wrap and flatten. Refrigerate about 3 hrs or until firm.

Roll out dough, a small portion at a time, to 1/4 inch [3/4 cm] thickness on lightly floured. Cut into rounds or different shapes. Sprinkle with granulated sugar or colored sprinkles before baking, if desired.

With metal spatula, transfer to ungreased cookie sheets, space about 1-1/2 inches [4 cm] apart.

Bake for 7-9 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Cool 1 minute on cookie sheets. Remove to wire racks; cool completely. Store in airtight container, or freeze.
